I remember it like it was yesterday. I was a gawky and rather intense 12-year old having the typical (read “emotional roller coaster”) Jr. High experience. My equally intense, and frankly rather scary P.E. teacher delegated the responsibility of taking “roll” to me. It was a bit of a daunting responsibility that my type-A, somewhat driven, and “model student” self took VERY seriously. I was constantly afraid I had marked someone “absent” who was only late, got my classmates mixed up with one another, or in some other way got it wrong. After taking roll, I would walk into the trailer that served as the P.E. teacher’s office and hand it to her saying “I’m not sure if this is right,” “I may have done this wrong,” or some other weak and powerless “disclaimer.” One day, the P.E. teacher CLEARLY had enough of my weak and powerless communication. She said in her very gruff (and scary) voice “PAMELA JETT! If you present the roll to me one more time using such pathetic language you will FAIL P.E.! You are smart. Stop communicating like you are not!”
